5083 aluminium is a non-heat-treatable alloy with magnesium and traces of manganese and chromium. It is highly resistant to attack by seawater and industrial chemicals. Like all the 5000-series high magnesium alloys, 5083 can be significantly hardened by cold work and retains exceptional strength after welding. Machinability of 5083 is poor due to its high strength.
5083 alloy is commonly available in various “H” tempers such as H32 (¼ Hard) or the similar strength marine tempers H116 and H321 – as well as the soft annealed Temper O condition.
Typical applications of 5083 aluminium alloy are shipbuilding, railroad cars, coachwork, pressure vessels, and various structural applications that benefit from the high strength.
5083 aluminium alloy is produced in plate, sheet, strip, forgings, tube and bar.
