Known as the “aircraft alloy”, 2024 is heat-treatable aluminum alloy with copper as the primary alloying element, and magnesium. Its other metallic elements include iron, silicon, manganese and zinc, in descending quantity order. 2024 aluminium has properties higher than 2017 and 2014. Though formability is generally considered only fair in the cold state, it is one of the most popular alloys for cold heading and roll threading applications. Can be machined to a high finish, but should only be spot, seam or flash welded. Corrosion resistance is fair. Due its high strength and excellent fatigue resistance, 2024 it is commonly used on structures and components in the aviation and transportation industries. the main alloying addition is copper, and it is formulated for primary forming into wrought products.
2024 aluminium alloy is available in sheet, plate, bar, strip, wire, rod, and tube.
